What the Typing Teacher Needs to Know

The emotional and social development of visually impaired students may be affected, as they have had more restrictions placed on them early in life. Their growth patterns have been retarded for lack of opportunities. Such students often have feelings of inferiority because of poor school performance as a result of poor eyesight.

When teaching typing to the blind, you should obtain the publisher's permission to have the lessons from the typing text recorded on cassette tapes. The blind student should have a cassette player and earphones at his or her desk and can then follow along with the rest of the class.

When teaching typing to the partially sighted student, the teacher should either use a typing text that has sufficiently large print or obtain the publisher's permission to have the pages of a textbook reproduced in a larger size. A school print shop or a local commercial copy service can probably do this at very little cost. However, the student's desk must be large enough to accommodate the larger size of paper. The student may also need a larger typing stand to support the larger sheets.

VISUAL IMPAIRMENT

A visually impaired student is one whose eyesight is so poor that it affects his or her educational performance. This category includes both partially sighted and blind students. These terms are defined as follows:

Blind
refers to someone whose

1. Visual acuity in the better eye, after best correction, is 20/200 or less, or whose

2. Visual loss is so severe that for educational purposes, vision cannot be used as a major channel of learning.

Partially sighted refers to someone whose

1. Visual acuity is 20/70 or less in the better eye, after best correction, and whose vision can be used as a major channel of learning, or whose

2. Vision deviates from the normal to such an extent that the student can benefit from the special educational facilities provided for partially seeing students.

Additional Program Information

Students with visual limitations will greatly benefit from the "Keyboarding for Individual Achievement" - Visually Limited Edition due to the addition of real human speech and extra large fonts.

All the menus, instructions, typing lessons, and ending lesson menu choices are presented audibly. Plus, when the student selects a lesson from the main menu, a magnified window pops up to provide easy identification of the lesson number.

We understand that some individuals may not want programs by grade level.   Therefore, we have also included a Standard "Keyboarding for Individual Achievement" Visually Limited Edition that does not focus on any particular grade level.

As you can see from the image below, each screen quadrant has a different visual or audio aid. Students hear the letter to type, they see a large size 72 font showing them the letter that needs to be typed, and the keyboard is highlighted with the letter to type. The typing line includes a marker that helps students keep track of their place.

Each lesson incorporates the split-screen approach, which means actions on the lower screen are monitored on the upper screen. This gives immediate reinforcement to students and assists in their learning. They also receive automatic positive feedback at the end of each typing drill.

The Teachers' Edition (see image below) allows you to select the grade level range appropriate for your students. This means that when the Level Button on the Main Menu displays 'Elementary', all the typing lessons and speed tests will be on grade levels 1-6. If you use the High School level, all the typing lessons and speed tests will automatically be changed to grade levels 10-12.

  • Real human voice recording says lesson you click on.
  • Special window automatically updates enlarged lesson display based on mouse position.
  • We can adjust the colors to your specific requirements.
  • Teachers' Edition allows you to change grade levels from Elementary, Junior High and High School.
  • All keyboarding lessons and timed writings are adjusted to the level you select.
Visually Limited & Blind Keyboarding

Students may be automatically timed and graded using the one, three, and five-minute speed tests included in the program. In addition, you have access to a printed record of all exercises. This provides both you and the parent with an accurate record of the student's progress.

The complete set of lesson plans and instructional goals, which are individually designed for each student, enable you to fulfill and adhere to the mandates of your Individual Education Plan (IEP).

An unlimited number of students may use the program, which means you can have more than one student set up at one computer station. A site license is available to allow installation to every computer at your location.
